College totes are ideal for fashion-forward girls looking for an alternative to the backpack to carry to class. Totes initially gained popularity among college women who only needed to carry a few books to class and didn’t like to lug around a large backpack. They also preferred the more stylish look of a tote over the utilitarian backpack. Though they were originally spotted on college campuses, campus totes have also gained a following with younger girls in high school and even middle school.

Campus tote bags come in a large variety of colors, sizes, and designs but their basic structure always remains fairly unchanged. Tote bags are rectangular in shape and usually have a flat bottom (though some do not have a solid bottom giving them the look of a rounded bottom). They are usually thin in width but tall enough to hold notebooks and a laptop. All totes have long shoulder straps that allow the bag to lay flat against the side.
