Pet carriers and packs are accessories needed by any pet lover who wishes to travel with their small dog or cat. Some pet carriers are truly totes or pet bags designed to hold your pet while you're on the go around town. However, many are designed for airplane and other long distance travel.

When shopping for pet carriers you intend to use for travel, size is key. While the maximum carrier size allowance in cabin varies by airline, most airlines fall within a few inches of 20” long x 12” wide x 10” high. As a general rule, the majority of airlines flying within the United States require that your dog or cat be able to stand, turn around, and lie in a natural and comfortable position while enclosed in their carrier.

Because the carrier must remain under your seat for the duration of the flight, soft-sided carriers are usually preferred over hard carriers because they are collapsible and can more easily fit under a variety of airplane seats. Soft-side carriers also tend to be more lightweight than hard carriers, which helps keep you under the weight limits imposed by most airlines.
