Product Features

  • True to the Mother Lode TLS series, there are a number of innovative interior and exterior features:
  • Adjustable laptop storage in a convertible! Discretely placed at the very top of the bag, the eBags Laptop Sling (patent-pending) cradles your laptop between a thick back-foam panel and the contents of the bag
  • Will your laptop fit? If your laptop’s middle dimension (width) is no more than 11.75”, and the longest dimension (length) is between 10.0” and 19.0”, the Laptop Sling will adjust for a perfect fit
  • Adjust the height to place your laptop in the most ideal vertical location based on what you packed and what feels good on your back
  • Adjust it once – snap it in/out quickly. Your clothing provides protection on the bottom/sides/top. A separate lining panel makes it easy to re-insert into a packed bag after going through airport screening
  • Click here to see an animation of the Laptop Sling in action
  • Fold-down shelf in the main packing compartment splits the space in half and reduces the shifting of contents to the bottom. If you don’t want to use it, un-snap it and fold it down
  • An unusual double-zip “U” shaped front compartment features a travel organizer Pen pocket, phone pocket, medium and large zippered pockets, zippered mesh pocket, and an extra-long key leash
  • Internal tie-down straps in the main compartment are generous in length and adjust from "high" to "low" cinch positions, letting you pack in layers
  • When clipped into the “high” position, they function as internal compression straps pulling down on the TOP of your clothes as well as the side gussets. When clipped “low”, they pull from the bottom edges
  • Snap-out zippered mini-pocket at the top of the compartment
  • Zippered mesh panel inside the lid of the main compartment helps to divide and organize
  • Interior main compartment measures 21.5" high, 5.5" deep, and has a tapered width from 13” to 14” – for a less boxy, more elegant look not found in the typical convertible
  • The front compartment is the full height/width of the main compartment, with depths ranging from 5” to around 3”
  • Like the TLS Wheeled Duffels, there is a zippered "forehead" pocket with a floating lining. You choose where to pack things. In the pocket, or in the front compartment – the lining will shift without any loss of total packing capacity
  • Vertical zippered front face pocket is perfect for boarding passes and will not “walk open” no matter how long your journey
  • A discrete water bottle pocket stores inside a zippered pocket, for better checked-baggage durability
  • Hidden inside the zippered pouch pocket is the TLS ID pocket. Never worry about loosing a luggage tag
  • Four exterior compression straps are carefully placed to provide maximum compression and reduced stress on the zippers. A partially packed bag benefits equally, preventing the contents from sloshing around
  • Hide-away contoured backpack straps are generously padded with Airmesh and feature a fully adjustable/removable sternum strap system
  • Full expansion zipper when you need extra volume - adds over 10 percent
  • Accessory loops are well placed, and the shoulder strap webbing is easily adjusted with a tug on the thumb-loop speed-cinch webbing
  • Self-repairing YKK® coil zippers use double sliders on almost all openings. Some have pullers that use photo-reflective sport cords for nighttime safety
  • Lockable D-rings on primary zippers discourage tampering and keep luggage locks in a consistent location
  • Three padded grab handles (top, bottom, side) for safe lifting from trunks and overhead compartments, and from beneath a seat
  • Adjustable/removable well-padded shoulder strap
  • High-visibility 210D orange nylon lining makes finding your stuff a lot easier
  • Simple, effective, removable waist belt
  • Total weight of bag only (without additional straps) is 3 lbs. 11.2 oz.
  • 840D Twisted Filament Polyester exterior
  • All YKK buckles

"Surprisingly roomy and well organized for the size. I have a 1 carry-on only rule when I travel. This was purchased for a 3 week trip to Europe because my current backpack was a little too large for the internation carry on and I had my doubts that everything I wanted and needed to take would fit. Upon packing a "dry run" to see what I would need to leave behind, I found that I could get 2 pairs of pants, 6 skirts, 9 tops, 2 sweaters, 2 scarves, 1 packable raincoat, pjs, under garments, socks, toiletries, 2 packable tote bags, guidebooks, electronics (ipad, phone, chargers, etc) plus an extra pair of shoes (and I'm not a petite person) with a little room to spare. I used the packing cubes for the first time (1 set of variety and 1 set of slim) which I will use on every trip from now on. Plus, with the padded straps, the pack was still comfortable to carry fully loaded."

"WOW, what a bag! I hate checking bags and had a week long business trip approaching and decided to try this bag. The 1st time I used this bag, I packed 6 pairs of casual slacks, 7 shirts, a pair of jeans, a pair of Crocks, 6 pairs of socks, 7 underclothes sets, numberous other items INCLUDING my laptop and it STILL fit into the OVERHEAD!! I am not a small person, I wear XXL shirts and pants, so it is possible to really get alot on stuff in there (I use the bundle method of packing, works really well). I will reiterate the caution that you can get this bag very heavy, it packs so much, but like I said, I'm a big guy, so no issues there for me, just a caution to those not built as beefy. From the 1st use I have enjoyed this bag, it has become my goto bag for all travel occations. It is a dream on three day and weekend trips. THANKS eBAGS!!"

"Having owned a variety of similar bags (Rick Steves Convertible Carry-On, Jansport Eurosak, and Ebags Weekender E-Tech Convertible), I can speak with some authority to the fact that this one is the best of the bunch. What sets this bag apart from the competition is that it incorporates all of the best features of each of the aforementioned bags - durable construction, portability via shoulder straps, carry handles, or (my favorite) backpack straps, an abundance of internal and external organizing pockets, interior tie down straps to secure the contents, exterior compression straps to relieve stress on the zippers and to move the center of gravity of the bag closer to the carriers back (when used in backpack mode, this relieves stress on the back), durable and smooth action YKK zippers, and an expansion zipper to allow for a little extra room in the main compartment. This is the only bag I travel with, as it is of legal carry-on size and has enough room to pack for a week long trip. I typically pack 4 shirts, 4 pair of pants, 4 sets of underwear/undershirts, socks, a pair of shoes, a belt, a laptop computer, a camera, portable GPS navigation unit, MP3 player, a cell phone, and assorted electronic accessories all with room to spare and without using the expansion zipper. The only recommendation I could make to improve this bag would be to change its construction from polyester to nylon, with nylon having a slightly higher tensile strength (less prone to tearing) and abrasion resistance (less prone to scuffing) than polyester. Overall, a terrific carry-on bag."

"I purchased the red version bag for a two week trip around Spain as my only piece of luggage to avoid checking anything and to maximize my mobility while traveling. It worked extremely well for this and will be definitely using it again in the future. I easily fit a weeks worth of clothing plus my laptop, camera, a second pair of shoes, and a few books. The way the bag opens makes it really easy to pack and stay organized on your trip. On the front the large organizer pocket is pretty nice for sticking small items and anything you want to access quickly. Carrying as a backpack is pretty comfortable, and the bag is easy to lug around. Appearance-wise, this isn't a bag that's going to win any beauty contests, but I didn't really want something that was going to attract any attention anyways. I do think red looks pretty nice with the grey zippers. When packed with all my stuff, I still had tons of room left. With a weeks worth of clothes and my macbook, it weighed about 25 lbs. Amazingly, on the way home, I added some souvenirs and four bottles of wine without even using the expanding zipper. That said, this bag is so big you could easily pack it with way more stuff than youd ever want to carry. Theres only a few things Id change: the padding on the back is pretty thin. When my laptop was stowed, carrying it would cause the screen to press keys on the keyboard so I was a bit wary of how well my laptop was protected. Also, the plastic buckles used feel like they are made of very cheap plastic - but I'm not that worried with the included warranty. Finally, unless you're careful about both how you pack and how big your laptop is the bottom of the bag can fold over a bit and cut into your back. Not a huge problem since I wasn't planning on carrying this bag more than a few miles at most. Overall this is the best bag I've used for a trip and Id definitely buy it again or recommend it without hesitation."

"I've had this bag for just shy of three years. It has been on four wheelers, snowmobiles, boats and bush planes throughout Alaska but still looked new. On the last trip I used it on the carrying strap broke; I simply used the backpack straps to complete the trip. Last week I got on eBags website and started a chat session with a customer service rep and told him what happened to my bag and asked if I could get a replacement strap. He said he would have to do some further checking on getting the replacement strap and would get back with me by e-mail in a few days, A few days later I got an e-mail that eBags did not have a replacement strap available for my bag at this time therefore they would send a replacement bag. Great customer service and eBags truly stands behind their great products."

"I had purchased this bag for a 3 week trip (2 week tour of Ireland and 1 extra week in London) where we were expected to carry all of our own bags and allowed only one large bag around this size as our main suitcase. Our tour also strongly recommended that we carry-on our bags so the chance of losing our bag was minimal as we would be on the go in Ireland and unable to wait for our bags to show up if lost. It was a toss up between this and Rick Steves bag of similar size and style. I purchased this bag as it seemed best for the price and the size was great. I knew I had to travel light, but thought about the small souveniors I would purchase along the way.:) The bag was VERY durable (even after some of the first line of stiching came apart the night before I left--eBags CS will replace) and it carried A LOT without ever expanding it! The handles were perfect and I wasn't worried as my bag was tossed and smashed. The shoulder straps were excellent with tons of padding and even after packing I could run and walk a lot in airport and out on the streets with comfort. Many people (me included) thought I would have some issues with such a big bag and being only 5 tall. I was fine...looked a little like a turtle but it wasn't bad...and the way I packed it, I was feeling fine...even though I did have to remind myself to give myself some clearance space behind me.:) The pockets was excellent and stored a lot of the little things, and it DEFINATELY came in handy! It certianly fit easily in the overhead compartment of our planes and being able to store the straps (a bit difficult to store straps when bag is packed) was a major plus! Traveling around Ireland and London with this bag was super easy as I never knew how much of a drag (no pun intended) it was using a wheeled suitcase of the same size! I walked the fastest and managed the roads without any problems. Oh, the rain, everything was safe & dry. Will use this bag more and more without a second thought!"

"These days, as a 70 yr old man, my first choice in luggage is the wheeled variety. However, current airline carry-on limits has forced me to Lighten-Up. While evaluating an endless number of other bags which didn't quite meet my needs, I encountered the Mother Lode TLS Weekender Convertible. The excellent ebags video, and the fact that the bag included an optional shoulder strap (important to me) convinced me to give it a try. The bag was all I hoped and more -- it had an expansion gusset which was a surprise to me. Because of its features and construction I rank it in the masterpiece category and would like to meet the person(s) who designed it. It will probably become my workhorse bag and although I expect to mostly use the optional shoulder strap, I must admit that I feel years younger when using it in the backpack mode."

"SO easy to travel with. We bought four of these for four family members, and traveled to Europe. The shoulder straps stowed easily for airplane check in, and came out easily for navigating the airport, the train and the walk to our hotel. On and off trains, in and out of hotels this bag was easy to move and to pack, and had more than enough room for a weeks worth of summer clothes plus a rain jacket, fleece jacket and two pairs of shoes. There was even enough room in her bag for my teenaged daughter who was staying a month. Well designed compartments, zippers and straps were sturdy, and the bags still look good after three hotels, six trains, three taxis, one tram, two storage lockers, three planes over and three planes back. (Lots of baggage handling!)"

"Excellent bag, sturdy, well built, 3 lbs 11 empty and a well thought out next-generation improvement on the already excellent eTech Weekender. Holds the entire transferred contents of my 22 Costco rollaboard with room left over (& without using expansion) Can't say enough good things about this bag. Best all round convertible choice for true one-bag adventure travel, and I've spent a lot of time both researching and doing the hands-on. If you're deciding between this and the eTech (I have both), I say choose this Mother Lode: same stated weight, theres a definite capacity advantage to the Mother Lode although I get a lower number multiplying the dimensions (I get about 2800 cu in un-expanded) than eBags states.Definite feature advantages to the Mother Lode: the top floating liner pocket for your TSA liquids bag plus room for other quick-access items, the expandability (puts you over the airlines 22x14x9 max, but a handy option out in the real world), the dropdown laptop slot (youll probably still want your own padded laptop sleeve), the included shoulder strap (although you can easily add your own to the eTech), the more lockable zippers and the zipper anchor rings to defeat the pen-opening trick, and the roomier front panel. These come at almost no weight gain over the eTech (not sure how they manage that), so win-win, and great price. Comfortable in backpack mode from airport to train/bus/subway to hotel. Waist strap accepts any slide-on pouch/pocket/bottle holder you like. My requests: lighten the lining color for even better visibility, upgrade all plastic strap hardware to metal, lighten the weight further, offer manlier colors, switch the light grey trim to black, switch inner nylon bag to mesh, rethink the bottle pocket. Adding wheels could be interesting. This is currently the best one-bag-travel choice I've seen. Get this plus any light flat shoulder bag for walkaround snacks/maps/tickets & go see the world."

"Wanting to save money and time, we decided to take only carry-on luggage on a recent trip to Italy. After some research, we decided to try one of these bags. It arrived, and we were amazed at how much we could put into the bag and yet not exceed carry-on dimensional limitations. It was no contest: we ordered another bag. The trip was a resounding success. The Weekender is ideal for going through customs, boarding planes, getting in and out of taxis and tiny hotel elevators. There is so much room that we took TOO much stuff. And yet were able to pack souvenirs for our trip home. Highly recommended."
