"I bought this for my 8 year old to use for school. It is recommended for kids 10 and up , but I needed more room for his books and lunch. It is well designed with a load of features for a kids day pack. The plus side is he will be able to use it on day hikes during the summer months."

The size is definitely large for our five year old, but we wanted something that was big enough for them to help carry some of their things in for an overseas trip as well as to use everyday at school. After about a month of steady use, both girls still really really like the packs, they look great, seem to be well made and I hope will last for a long time to come. Because they are large, we will need to be careful not to overload them until the girls are big enough to handle it. I wouldn't mind borrowing one every once in a while!
