"I like the layout and the amount it holds for it's size. However, the middle compartment zipper gets stuck sometimes. The material sometimes twists so that the zipper won't close, and if you twist it back then it will work. A medium annoyance, but an otherwise great bag. I use this backpack a lot when I travel, as my carry on, and also often as a day pack during the trip."

"It is nearly perfect. I use it every day instead of a purse/briefcase and will use it as a 2nd carry-on when traveling by air. It would be perfect if it had these three additional modifications: (1) additional flat non-zippered pocket on back wall middle compartment (for cards/larger sheets of paper to keep them flat) (2) the side water bottle/umbrella pockets could be just a bit larger in circumference (quart size nalgene bottle does not fit once pack full/and w/laptop (3) it should come in other colors (spruce). A plus would be a small hip belt that could be tucked away. I have not yet used it telescoped to my carry-on handle so have not yet tested the durability of the zipper on same or how that rides. Otherwise the pack sits nicely on my narrow shoulders, I love the taller side pockets and zipper configuration (zippers forward and long) making it easier to access full pack. I found the forward most pocket to be deep and functional. I like the soft comfortable handle on the top of the pack. I used a North Face Borealis as a 2nd carry-on for several years until I found this pack. I have RS 21 rolling carry-on in spruce and would have preferred to buy this pack in spruce also. I want my pack to stand out when traveling from other black/gray bags but red is a bit loud (although this spice red is more muted). I upgrade when gear wears out or if I find a bag with features significantly better over what I am currently using. I would recommend this bag."

"Overall, sturdy and functional, and the zipper quality seems to have been improved. But I liked the design of the previous Rick Steves Laptop Backpack."

"After using the Rick Steves Appenzell backpack for daily hauling as well as world travel, I finally needed a replacement. I broke in this handsome and solidly constructed bag on a trip to London -- kudos to eBags for the fast delivery -- and have been using it daily to tote around a laptop, camera, and various odds and ends. Compared with the Appenzell, the taller side pockets work much better with 24oz water bottles, the bottom is better padded, and the carry handle is much more comfortable and robust. However, I miss the small front pocket and it's a little harder to slide the laptop in and out with the tapered shape. On balance, I'm very happy with this pack."
