"The newer model has slightly softer foam in the hip belt to make it more comfortable. The sloaping bottom is to avoid bag sag. Ever own a backpack that sags at the bottom it is uncomfortable. It causes weight shift downward and when climbing rocky sections it actually hits you in the butt. Check other manufacturers bags and you will see this sloap bottom benefit as well. Great pack, great construction, great fit. Bag access thru large pocket is a plus!"
