"Backpack looks great, is fairly comfortable to wear, and has an adequate number of pockets. Unfortunately it's not very expandable, while being fairly wide and long, which means storage capacity is disappointing, for me at least. It's enough for essentials, like my 12.5" laptop, lunch, charger, portable drive, book, and some small electronics, but you're about 60-75 percent filled at that point. Because it seems both the main and secodary sections share the same bottom, if you fill one, the other is pretty much unusable. Lastly, the laptop compartment is pretty snug - good in the way that it doesn't take much space in the bag, but bad because it makes me have to force the laptop in and out a little too hard, making me fear for my laptop's plastic casing. It would be much better if there was a separate side opening for a laptop that I know some backpacks do, as it would make it easier to get it out when there's more than a few things already in the bag. Overall I'm still fairly satisfied with the bag. It seems to be made to last, doesn't jab me in the back like my previous backpack did sometimes, and again, is probably the best-looking backpack I ever had - I just wish it was a bit more flexible."

"This is such a great backpack! I have 3 different binders that I use for school (Two 3" binders and One 2.5" binder) and they fit perfectly in the backpack with still a little bit of extra room for a folder or two in the main pocket. I definitely recommend this backpack for other students with multiple books to carry."

"** Placement of compression straps makes accessing the two primary storage compartments awkward / prevents opening the bag as wide as it can go without becoming a multistep process. This becomes an issue when loading a 15" laptop. ** Some reviews indicate the padded section in the main compartment doubles for carrying a hydration bladder, and a cushioned compartment for a laptop. The padded compartment will only fit 15" laptops with a widescreen form factor. I have two 15" laptops: a Sony Vaio (personal/widescreen display), and a Lenovo ThinkPad (work). The Sony slides into the pocket easily; the ThinkPad battery extends outside the frame of the chassis and makes the laptop too big from side-to-side to fit into the padded compartment. ** Smaller storage area seems to take away space from the primary area. Given the different proportions between the two storage areas, I would suggest looking at this bag in person before taking advantage of the great price at eBags, particularly if you are expecting double-duty for work/travel and outdoor use. If your primary requirement is outdoor use, inspect this bag in person first. ** Carry loop at the top of the bag needs to be larger and padded; my hands are slightly on the large size and I would not use the handle for carrying any significant distance. Another detail to check-out at a brick-and-mortar before purchasing on-line."

"This is a backback for a 6th grader, the hangup strap on the top came undone in 2 months and then the shoulder strap started to pull away from the fabric. Ebags would not replace it since we had it for 2 months. I had to send it to The North Face Warranty department. They repaired it and sent it back but it took 7 weeks."

"I just took this bag on a 7 day trip to Glacier National Park. I used it to carry essentials on the airplane including my iPad which I put in the padded compartment. It worked just great as a carry on. Then at Glacier National Park we hiked many trails and I used the padded compartment for my hydration pack. The backpack had a velcro loop to hold the pack upright and an opening for the tubing. I also loved the chest and hip straps which took all the weight off of my shoulders. This is a great backpack that works well in the city of hiking in the back country."

"I love the Recon. I've always had troubles finding a backpack that's big enough to hold my laptop as well as multiple books and binders but this is perfect. However, if you pack the second largest compartment, it gets a bit tight. But the shoulder straps are comfortable and even when its full, the weight doesn't drag me down and instead feels very light."

"I have a little obsession with purchasing backpacks for different uses. My main arsenal includes an L.L. Bean classic backpack with two main pockets and a Targus laptop bag. Both of them have served me well for years, but I wanted something a little fresher that was still big enough to handle my laptop and the tons of papers I'm always carrying around to grade. TNF Recon was a perfect choice for me - it's basically a better version of the Targus bag I have. It has a main pouch with a sleeve that can hold my laptop (tightly and securely) and room for a couple of books. The front pouch has a million little pockets for holding various items and has plenty of room to fit things like my glasses case, portable hard drive, etc. It has an awesome little pocket on the outside which is great for tossing my headphones and such in for easy access. The mesh outside pocket can fit a sweatshirt for when I'm out hiking and such. I've had the bag for about a month and it's serving its purpose perfectly. I even discovered how water-resistant it is when I got caught in a downpour a few days ago. The straps are thin, but comfortable and easily adjustable. I hate bulky bags with huge straps, so it might be a personal preference, but I think it carries the weight comfortably. Overall, I've been really pleased with my purchase."

"It doesn't have as much room as my LLBean bag, but the LLBean bag is out of stock until December and I need a new backpack now. There is no separate section in the bottom for dirty P.E. clothes, there seem to be a lot of adjustable straps hanging out all over the place. I hope they don't get in the way as they come loose from their black rubber bands. I have to see over time if it's large enough. Today was the first day I brought it to school. It does seem very sturdy and rugged so I'm glad about that. As I get used to keeping all my books and binders and lunch and clothes in different compartments (I loved the spaces in my LLBean bag) I'll probably like it better. Right now I'm still getting used to having less space for my stuff. I hope I adjust and I like it because this bag wasn't cheap."

"This backpack has alleviated all of the back problems I've had with my previous Targus backpack and Timbuk2 laptop messenger. I would definitely buy this bag again!"

"I just got this bag yesterday. It looks very good and seems very well made. However, it is not very big for a high school student. I would like it much better if it is bigger ."
