"In case anyone was wondering about the difference between the Mens fit & Womens fit Surge 2 backpacks: As a female, height 5' 4" when I have it fully packed I look like a turtle walking to class. Only the "Mens" Surge2 came in the bright green color I wanted so I disregarded the available Womens design & bought the Mens in green. Once I got it packed for the 1st time, I realized WHY they have a Womens "better fitting" design: the adjustable chest strap has a slider that allows you to move it up & down for comfort. On the Mens Surge2 that I got, the chest strap lays right across my "twins" in the lowest position, which smashes them & hurts bigtime. In the highest position it doesn't really hurt, but it still smashes them downward in a way that makes me worry that they'll get saggy from this backpack, so I go without the chest strap. I guess that's what I get for shopping based on color! It has lots of pockets. The laptop section is very padded so I have no worries about potential damage from day-to-day accidents. The front pockets are huge but I notice when I put a lot of big items in them they tend to expand backwards, into the section with the bigger pockets where my textbooks go. This is a problem for my soft-cover rental text books because the friction from the random laptop-chargers, headphones, graphing calculators, etc. are really wearing down the edge of my books on the other side of the fabric. So while the pockets are big, I can't necessarily stuff them full of my junk & expect it all to stay in brand-new shape. That is no different than any other backpack though I suppose. I will say that my stuff has maintained a lot better in my Surge 2 than it ever did with the JanSports I used to replace yearly. Overall, I love this backpack & would recommend it for students."

"The bag is pretty much as advertised. The only thing I did not realize from the pictures was that the main PC compartment zipper does not unzip down both sides of the bag....it unzips only on the top on one side and all the way down the side on the other. Not a deal breaker as I would have purchased it with that knowledge. As with any bag such as this purchased online, I was initially disappointed with the organization of the bag and it's many sleeves and pockets....but after 2 weeks now, I am used to it and actually am very satisfied with the organization now. I purchased this bag because of the quality of the materials and the reputation of the manufacturer. I needed it because I have to carry 2 laptops on a regular basis. I was initially concerned with this purchase because one review said it barely fit a 17" laptop. I will tell you that my 17" HP Elitebook fits just fine in the PC compartment (with room to spare for a future pad in the dedicated compartment) AND I carry a 14.1" Dell Latitude D630 in one of the other compartments as well. I also carry all the necessary power supplies, mouse, Ethernet cable, over the ear noise cancelling headset, mp3 player, mobile phone accessories/backup power and a hoard of other just in case items without an issue. My first impression of the backpack after fully loading it as stated above and putting it on my shoulder (I generally am a one shoulder person unless I am doing more than going back and forth to the car) was WOW! It literally felt like the bag was half as heavy as my older Targus backpack. After putting it on both shoulders, I immediately noticed that I did not feel the urge to hunch forward to help balance the load like I do with the Targus backpack. When I only need one laptop (that would mean I am only carrying the Dell) it feels like putting a box of tissue on my shoulder. I would recommend this for anyone that uses a backpack for their laptop needs."

"The Surge is a great bag. Really sleek looking in my opinion with the one big main pocket. The shoulder straps are very nice. The same gear in this bag just seems lighter than when using my Brenthaven. The best part about this bag for my use is, it will hold a Eagle Creek Pack-It 18 folder which gives me a lot of flexibility for 1-2 night travel. I have packed everything in this bag for a short trip. Laptop, iPad, Pack-It folder and toiletries. Depth under 9 inches so it fit perfectly in a United EMB-145 overhead (or under seat)"

"I purchased these backpacks for our male photojournalists, who use these bags on a daily basis, transporting their 15" laptops, chargers and some camera equipment inside. I've purchased a total of 10 NorthFace Surge black backpacks since 2007. So far, I've only had to replace 1 well-worn backpack with busted zippers; but given the abuse they've gotten, these backpacks are quite durable. Your price is also lower than the rest (amazon, zappos, etc.)"

"The Surge II was purchased for my grandson, entering DePauw University this fall. He expressed great delight in receiving this gift from his grandparents. I had purchased a North Face backpack as a graduation gift to the oldeer breother of this year's recipient. I spent a fair amount of time evaluating backpacks. The North Face bags are the best available. The flexibility and arrangement of storage areas is outstanding, The quality of the material is the finest available, Any student entering high schol or college should consider a North Face bag through E Bags. You won't regret it!"

"I walk 2 miles to work each day and back and my Surge 2 provides great comfort and durability. It conveniently carries my MacBook and iPad with all the additional cords in a very convenient location. The size is big enough to allow me to bring a change of clothes and other essentials where ever I go. I did a lot of research into competing bags and believe that I made the best value decision possible with this backpack."

"Very good organization. Comfortable on the back and shoulders. Just the right size. Zippers and pulls are well made. Love the cable pouch opposite the water bottle pocket."

"This is almost the perfect backpack. It is just the right size. I had previously tried the Router which is basically the same bag but bigger and I thought it was too big. I returned it for the Surge II. It is made extremely well and has a multitued of pockets for just about anything that you would need to carry. It is not TSA friendly but it could be with just small design adjustments. That is not a big deal to me as I don't mind taking it out and putting it in a bin. My only complaint would be the handle. It is virtually useless. It is thin and if you have anything in the bag it is difficult to carry using the handle. That said, the shoulder straps are great and I just carry it by them. It works better on one shoulder than any bag I have previously tried."

"The first day I received the bag, I went a long hiking on mount Katahdin. I packed all my stuff including clothes, a water bladder, a bottle, lunch, an ipad, and a camera in it. It did a great job. Very good design with conmfortable belts, and firm frame. Definitely the best backpack I have ever usesd."

"I checked this bag myself at the one of the North Face store in NYC. I wanted to buy right away but there was no black, so I had to make online purchase. It has very different kinds of pockets and spaces which is facinating and that was exactly the thing that I was expecting from this backpack. It satisfies my expectation. On the top of that, I actually feel lighter with this backpack when comparing to my somewhat-20bucks-backpack. I didn't believe one of those review which says I would feel lighter when I'm using this backpack, but it is true!! (but don't expect that you will feel nothing even when you're walking about an hour with your laptop in the backpack, that doesn't happen) The way it sticks to my back is just so great. I'm pretty sure that I will use this one until this baby dies or the next series comes up."
