My last backpack was very large and I got use to fitting everything into it, but I do believe that is why it finally broke. I have a 15" mac book and it fits into the laptop compartment with a soft cover just fine. The main compartment could be a little larger, being a science major I tend to put a lot of books into my backpack. I have also used this backpack for a carry on and it worked just fine! When I have it packed its extremely comfortable to wear! Still trying to figure out what to put in the front pocket though. Over all I love this backpack!" |

"I have the women's version of this (slightly different strap design) and use it for a carryon when I travel, plus for random trips that require cargo. Love the separate computer pocket with its own zipper - makes it really easy to go through airport security! There are lots of pockets for organization, and they're really big. One drawback is that it makes the main compartment smaller, but that's not a problem since the organizer compartments are large. It's longer than my previous backpack. The computer pocket fits my 13" MacBook with room to spare, and my beau has no problem with his MacBook Air (which is much bigger across, not sure what size) in his version of this bag. Very happy with it." |

But the truth is I only paid $50 because of an amazing sale that happened only ebags. --PP--This is a great back pack, still looks brand new, never hurts my back. Organization is the 2nd best i've seen; #1 was a piece of junk, that tore apart in no time. I just wish it was a little bigger in the main pouch, like maybe an extra 3 to 5 inches, from front to back. Some times I need to carry my laptop, two binders, and medium thick and a very think text book and they wont all fit, especially if i'm backing a lunch as well. --PP--There are 2 small water pouches on each side; which are a little silly. Would be better if there was just one water pounch that could expand enough to carry one larger water bottle, say a 4in diameter would be nice, then the other side could stay the same or have a zipped pouch instead. The only case one would need 2 small bottles would be when hiking, but then you always have room inside or you can clip extra things on. While at school or work one doesn't want to clip on extra things to the exterior." |

Second main pocket is way bigger than you would think, and easily fits a change of work clothes (no shoes though). Other pockets are small-ish but still very useful. One nice touch is the water bottle pocket - it's quite deep, meaning my Camelbak never tips out. Straps are OK, not the most comfortable." |

Like a previous reviewer I didn't like the front pocket either, that's where I keep my personal items like my mints, band-aids, nail clippers, etc. The shoulder straps and waist belt work very well on my frame (5¿", 200 lbs and the backpack goes from my shoulders all the way to my very lower back) as long as the shoulder straps are tight to my back which is the way I like it. It seems to be somewhat waterproof as I noticed water beading rather than soaking in, but as I live on the wet coast, I also purchased a rain cover for my new toy because I hate getting my reading books wet." |

Unfortunately, it started to come unsown in several places. Thus, the purchase of a new backpack. This feels and looks like a very sturdy backpack and it does come with a good warranty. I have three concerns with its construction: One, it needs more small zipper pockets along the sides and one on the front strap for a cell phone. Two, the shoulder straps are very stiff, making the item more uncomfortable to wear than I had anticipated. Three, it is already fairly heavy feeling before I even put anything in it. I also did not receive the color I clicked when I ordered. The picture on this survey is the one I ordered. The one I received has much more red on it. I liked the color and pattern of one I was supposed to get better. However, I don't want to hassle with an exchange, nor do I have time to do so before my next trip. While the purchase process was really simple and efficient, and the item arrived quickly--all in all kind of a disappointing experience. I probably won't order a backpack online again." |

He stuffs it to maximum capacity every day. One teacher does require a 3 inch binder, so that takes up most of the room. Besides having to cram all the books and binders in, the zippers only come down halfway, making it even more difficult to stuff. However, with all the stuffing and cramming, the fabric and zippers are holding up beautifully. All in all, a great bag, just a bit small for our use." |

Everytime I look at this backpack, I think how it looks so much better than computer bag. The red that I got looks absolutely amazing with the silver/black. Functionality. This backpack is great for carrying a computer. The bag can fit two laptops with no problem, not to mention every other electronic device I own (portable 500 GB USB drive, Kindle Paperwhite, accessories, power inverter, accessories, etc.) and a few pens. The ONE and ONLY complaint that I have about this backpack is that only one pocket really fits my 15.something widescreen laptop well. My other fifteen inch not-so-widescreen laptop fits in there great though. Caution for those looking for a laptop backpack for a 17-inch laptop: this backpack will probably not fit you laptop, although it is on a case by case basis depending on your screen's dimensions. Durability: Overall, it seems to be very well constructed. I got this for a Christmas present and haven't had much of a chance to use it, but I am thinking that the backpack will easily last as long as my laptop does. The zippers are high-quality. The mesh and fabric seems feel strong. Overall: For those of you with a laptop that is under 17-inches, this backpack is SOOOO worth the money. The only reason I gave this backpack an 8 star rating under one of the ratings was the fact that I can't use what is probably supposed to be the section for the laptop for my laptop. I recently broke the zipper on the last two backpacks at the start of this spring semester, so I decided to splurge and buy a higher quality one. The zippers seem pretty durable and hopefully will last me the rest of my school career. The color of the bag is great! The only things I would like to change would be the flap of cloth that covers the zippers--the zippers occasionally get snagged on it--but I folded them back and now nothing gets snagged. Also, in my opinion, the pocket at the bottom should be at the top instead. I like to put my keys and charger in there and it's really inconvenient for it to be on the bottom, in case it comes undone, but I've adjusted. I carry quite a bit of odds and ends and it has more pockets than I can find stuff for now! Overall, it's a great product, and I do recommend this one!" |

"I bought this backpack after several Swiss Gear packs have failed me miserably (ripping apart after less than a year multiple times) and decided it was time for a change. I noticed an inordinate amount of people on campus had The North Face bags, so I decided to check them out. After looking over all the laptop bags on the TNF website, I saw the Surge and took a liking. I then proceeded to look up reviews and videos for the bag to make sure it was what I was looking for in a pack. After a few youtube videos I had made up my mind, and then went to look for websites that sold the bag. I discovered ebags and was happily surprised to find that not only were there detailed descriptions of what the pack was like, but that it was also during a sale on the site. I quickly made to buy the pack and it arrived in a very short amount of time. So far it has served my needs well. It has only been cramped a few times and that has been because I put more than what I usually carry to class in it, so not a big deal. Also, the high number of organizational pockets and compartments make for such nice features as I love pockets and ways to store many things, most of which I never need anyway, I just like having them handy. The laptop compartment holds my 15.6 in laptop in a neoprene sleeve comfortably and is suspended about 2 or 3 inches form the bottom of the bag to prevent shock if you should drop it, a nice feature. The main storage compartment is fairly large with more than enough room for notebooks and a textbook or two. The smaller compartment is more so for the organization of office supplies like pens, pencils, calculators and the like. But there is some room, this is where I keep my academic planner. The front zipper pockets offer quick access to a couple of mesh pockets and one padded pocket which is nice for my iPod which I dislike carrying in my pants pocket. The top loading padded computer bay easily holds a 15¿ laptop and iPad. Best feature is the non-full length zipper. I saw a co-worker forget to zip his bag and a $3k computer slid across the parking lot when he got out of the car. Won¿t happen with this bag. The main compartment has enough room to pack work files and sufficient items for a two day business trip, or extended day hike with room for food, water, rain gear and climbing shoes. Done both. The ¿office¿ bay has zippered and Velcro secured pouches to keep hard drives, pens, pointers, credit card wallet, etc. in a well organized, easily accessible arrangement. The real bonus is a zippered compartment on the bottom with enough room to hold a power supply, extra cords, USB chargers, etc.. Other absolutely great features are the side zipped panels on the front, allowing you to undo one side or the other to get at your mouse or rail pass without having to undo the entire compartment (which you can also do if needed!). The two side pockets are either top loading or front loading, means you can reach behind while wearing the pack and grab keys or door access cards with ease. Heavy duty materials and well designed straps means this bag will take just about any abuse you can give it. This thing is perfect!" |

The only things I would recommend for improvement are as follows: 1) Have the beener clips a little lower on the shoulder straps, like on my old recon 2) Have straps on the bottom (or on sides) where I could strap a jacket in 3) Have some strap tiedowns if the straps on the bottom are a bad idea with the NF engineers I highly recommend this pack and would encourage anyone else to seriously consider it when looking for a new one." |
