FRESH WATER: Granada Isletas, Nicaragua

Though technically part of the colonial city of Granada, Lake Nicaragua is a world unto itself. Each of the lake’s 365 tiny isletas (one for each day of the year!) is privately owned, and a recent uptick in both island development and boat tour operators has made exploring them popular among Nicaraguans and foreign visitors alike.

The pure volume of different options means the Granada Isletas really do offer something for everyone, from upscale ecotourism (the award-winning Jicaro Island Ecolodge) to ultra-modern boutique hotels (Meson Nadi) to a wide spectrum of private vacation homes. Expert tip: don’t be in such a hurry to get out on the water that you neglect to explore the city of Granada; it’s a smaller, more jungly shadow of its Spanish namesake.
