CULTURE CLUB: Málaga, Spain

If you’ve resolved to make the arts a bigger part of your life in 2017, Málaga is an absolute must-do. Unsurprisingly, Picasso’s hometown in the sensual Andalusia region of Spain has long been a beacon for artists and aesthetes—but in recent years, the local collections have reached a marvelous critical mass. Start, of course, with a visit to the Museo Picasso, where more than 200 of the artist’s works are on display within the 16th-century Palacio de Buenavista.

The 8,000 square-foot Centro de Arte Contemporáneo (CAC) should also be on your list; modeled after the German concept of kunsthaus, or house of the arts, the CAC is as much an interactive cultural hub as it is contemporary showcase. Paris’ revered Centre Pompidou has an outpost here as well: a five-year “pop-up” displaying works by Magritte, Chagall and Kahlo in an ultra-modern waterfront gallery. For those who prefer to look a little farther back, there is plenty to see—the Antequera Dolmens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to rare Neolithic monuments.
